Ke Kulekele Hele Kula
Attendance Policy
Students and parents/guardians are reminded of the importance of daily attendance. Schools are responsible for the education of the child and parents are responsible for ensuring that their child attends school daily and arrives on time.
The procedures for absences, tardiness and early release, are as follows:
***If the parent does not arrive within 5 minutes of the time stated on the pass, the student will be sent back to class and the parent/guardian will need to get a pass from the office and pick up the student from his/her classroom.***
Shoes and appropriate dress are required as specified by teachers in order to ensure health and safety.
Every reasonable effort will be made to notify parents of any illnesses, injury, accident, or incident involving their child(ren). If parents cannot be contacted, the person(s) named on the Emergency Card will be contacted to carry out necessary responsibilities. In the event of emergency care, 911 will be called. Parents will be responsible for any medical charges associated with a 911 call.
Ke Kulekele Olakino a Palekana - Health and Safety Policy
Ke Kulekele Olakino a Palekana
Health and Safety Policy
In order to ensure a safe and healthy school environment, all rules, policies, and procedures in regard to precautionary and other measures will be followed.
No ka ʻIkepili Olakino (Medical Information)
Hawaiʻi State Law requires all students to meet physical examination, immunization, and tuberculosis clearance requirements before they may attend any public or private school in the State.
All immunizations must meet minimum age and interval requirements between vaccine doses.
Wā Hoʻāʻo (Provisional Entrance Notice)
A student may be allowed to begin school though some requirements remain incomplete (outside of the TB assessment). In this case, a Provisional Entrance Notice will be sent to parents/legal guardians. This notice will allow the student a 3 month time period to complete the requirements necessary to continue to attend school.
Wā Hoʻokō ʻOle (Exclusion Notice)
An Exclusion Notice will be issued if the 3 month Provisional Entrance period has expired and the student has failed to fulfill the requirements within that time frame. An Exclusion Notice allows a grace period of 30 days to complete the requirements. (HAR 302A-1162)
Wā Kō ʻOle (Incomplete records)
A student will remain at home if both the provisional and exclusion notices have expired and until documentation of progress towards completion has been provided to the school Health Office.
(HAR 302A-1162)
No ke Ala Hoʻokaʻaʻike (Communication with the Health Room)
Health forms, health information, nurse visits, and doctorʻs notes are stored and available in each studentʻs Magnus account and health file. Parents are responsible for informing the school Health Office of any changes to your childʻs health or emergency information, including any special medical conditions or changes to medication.
No ka Mākau Hele Lua (Bathroom readiness skills)
All students must be completely toilet trained before starting school. Students must be able to communicate when needing to use the restroom and know how to independently and properly use the restroom, including how to clean and dress themselves.
No ka Loaʻa i ka Maʻi (Illness at school)
Any student that becomes ill during the school day will be evaluated by the school nurse. Based on the nurseʻs assessment, the student will either be treated and returned to class or be picked up by a parent/guardian or an authorized emergency contact within one (1) hour of being contacted by the school Health Office.
No ke Kuʻi ʻia o ke Poʻo (Concussion protocol)
Activities requiring concentration and attention may worsen symptoms and delay recovery of a concussion. A studentʻs return to school full-time after a concussion is subject to clearance by the treating physician. A letter from the physician is required to return to school.
No ka Pōulia (Emergencies)
Due to the nature and possible severity of incidents, it is essential that all parents/guardians update the school Health Office with adequate and accurate information at all times. Parents/guardians will be called first. Should the Health Office be unable to reach a parent/guardian, another emergency contact will be called to pick up the student. Parents must provide 2 parent/guardian contacts as well as 2 other emergency contacts who are able to pick up the student from the school within one (1) hour of receiving a call from the school. Please make sure the individuals on your emergency contact list are willing and able to pick up your child if you are not available to do so.
911
If it is determined that emergency treatment is required, 911 will be called. Parents/guardians will be responsible for any medical charges associated with a 911 call.
No ka Lāʻau Lapaʻau (Medication at school)
Should a student require medication during the school day, a ʻRequest to Store and Administer Medicationʻ form is to be filed with the health room. All prescriptions and over-the-counter medications are required to be on file if brought on campus. Students in kindergarten through 6th grade are prohibited from carrying medication on their person, in their backpack or in their student desk, and all medication must be stored and taken at the health room. If medication is found, it will be confiscated, and a parent/guardian will be called to pick up the student. This is a preventative measure to ensure the safety of the student and other individuals.
No ka Maʻi Kūmau (Chronic Illnesses)
Students requiring asthma inhalers or epipens are strongly urged to store an additional prescribed dose of those medications in the health room for emergency use.
No ka Hōʻalo Koina (Exemptions)
Should a student require an Exemption from Immunization form for either medical or religious reasons, both DOH forms are available at the Health office upon request. No other exemption forms are allowed by the State of Hawaiʻi. Students who have not been vaccinated may not be permitted to attend school when there is a danger of an epidemic from any communicable disease for which immunization is required. Attendance will only be permitted if the student receives the required immunization or once the epidemic is over.
Pāheu Meaʻai (Food Allergies)
Nāwahīʻs school food service provides pre-set meals. Should a student have a food allergy that requires avoidance of certain foods, a Special Dietary Needs form must be completed by your childʻs pediatrician and kept on file at the school Health Office. This form is available at the Health office upon request.
